Castle Girl I need to know how long it took to build a castle, who did the construction, how they determined a place to put it and who designed them.If you can tell me any of these it would help.
Philip Davis Their is no simple answer to you questions. Castles varied in size, function and period. All these factors affect construction time, method and personel. For instance, a small motte and bailey castle of the 11th century, such as the initial castle at Peversney, built of earth and wood, could have been erected in a couple of months, using pressed peasant labour under the direction of the local lord (not a specialist architect). A 13th century Edwardian castle in Wales such as Conwy, built of stone would have taken years (Conwy in the short time of 4 years others took longer and many were never finished), would have been built by specialist paided masons and workers (over 1500 in the case of Conwy) under the supervision of a specialist architect (Master James of St George) at a cost of £20,000 (only several million dollers in current prices but a huge part of the GNP of England).
